2. Chemosystematics

In the (macro-) molecular phylogenetics era, chemosystematic studies provide phenetic characters to define previously not recognized and morphologically not definable clades. Moreover, chemosystematic studies provide a rational approach to search for new sources of rare natural products, which are of interest in e.g. the fields of medicine or agriculture. Also the search for new natural products can be rationalized using a chemosystematic approach.
